An Introduction To Wrestling

Depending on how you view it or how serious you are about wrestling, wrestling is a sport that can either be a fun game, a competition wherein someone wins and someone loses, or a profit-making undertaking wherein you can gain either popularity or notoriety.

* Training the Body to Become a Weapon

Wrestling is a sport where your body is your weapon. If you are serious about becoming a professional wrestler, you need to be constantly training and building up your strength. This means working out throughout the year, even during the off-season, when you aren't participating in dual meets and wrestling tournaments. It also means maintaining or cutting your weight while simultaneously doing strength training.

* Strength Training and Wrestling

Maintaining or cutting weight is important in wrestling because when you are training to become a wrestler, your body requires more nutrients compared to the average individual. If you are trying to take off some weight, strength training becomes even more important since your body uses up its own muscles for food during wrestling practice and actual wrestling matches. In this regard, diet plays a major role in strength training. Your carbohydrate intake is restricted (since your goal is to cut down on your weight); your body turns to the carbohydrates stored in your body and uses those for energy. When the stored carbohydrates are used up, your body will next turn to your liver, where glycogen is stored. If you wrestle the next day, it is this glycogen that your body will use for energy.

* Muscling Up Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

Contrary to what you may think, training to become a professional wrestler and building up the muscles and strength to overcome your opponents doesn't require that you buy expensive training equipment. In addition, there are strength building exercises you can perform easily, without having to pay a lot of money for equipment and facilities. You can read more about essential wrestling gear and accessories at http://www.piledriveruk.com

* Amateur and Professional Wrestling

Wrestling is a sport that attracts millions of fans worldwide. College wrestling and professional/international wrestling are two divisions of wrestling. College wrestling is amateur wrestling. International and Olympic professional wrestling matches are governed and administered by the Fédération Internationale des Luttes Associées or FILA.

In the world of professional wrestling, the World Wrestling Entertainment or WWE (formerly the World Wrestling Federation or WWF) is a powerhouse to reckon with. Many professional wrestlers have been launched to stardom after competing in the WWE, which is considered as the largest professional wrestling organization to date.

Another professional wrestling organization is the Total Nonstop Action or TNA Wrestling. Established in 2002 by father and son Jerry and Jeff Jarret, TNA Wrestling was created after Jeff Jarrett had a falling out with Vince McMahon, chairman of the WWE. Jerry Jarrett took it upon himself to start another professional wrestling organization where his son can wrestle since it was unlikely that Jeff would ever be seen in the WWE ring again.

7 Tips For Buying Action Figures

This short guide explains what you need to know before buying your action figures, where you should look for them, the best places to buy your figures, and how to decide who to trust if you're ordering online.

1) Know Your Subject

Make sure you know which figures were made, when they were made, how many, the rare or "chase" figures, and how much they originally sold for and their going price now.

Most of this information is available on the manufacturer's websites.

The best and quickest way to find out a figures "selling price" is by doing an advance search on eBay for completed auctions.

You will then be able to get a list of all auctions for that item that have finished within your chosen time period, how many bids they had and the price they sold for.

Please note though that there are several other factors to be taken into account here, e.g. the category they were listed in, the item description, quality and the "sales ad" or "copy".

Also eBay is very much a "buyers" market, meaning that the prices achieved for items are generally a lot lower than retail.

2) Popular Doesn't Always = Valuable

Many people are under the false impression that the more popular an action figure is then the more valuable it will be; however this is often NOT the case.

A prime example was the Moore Action Collectibles series 1 Buffy The Vampire Slayer Action figures which had six Buffy figures, three Angels, two Willows and only one Giles per case.

So which sold for the most?

Buffy right?

WRONG!

The Giles and Willow figures became the most sought after and began selling for anything up to $30 each!

And Buffy?

Well she was being "dumped" for a mere dollar!

Why?

Simple because of the old Supply vs Demand rule.

Remember there were 6 TIMES more Buffy figures than Giles.

The moral of this story:

Be Careful with what you're buying and know you're market.

3) What Should I Consider Before I Decide Where To Buy My Action Figures?

There are several different factors that will ultimately influence where you buy from and how much you will pay, so we'll look at these first then where to buy.

New or Secondhand?

Before you jump to decisions and decide on only buying new figures first think about what you are going to do with your action figure.

For example if you are going to customize it (more on customizing later) then you would be wasting your money buying a new figure.

Production Quantities:

Most mass produced figures will be readily available from your local high street stores such as Toys R Us, Wal-Mark, Woolworths, K-mart, EB, Gamestop etc.

Limited production figures on the other hand are generally sold in specialist stores such as Forbidden Planet and local comic book shops.

Quantities

As with most things the more you buy the greater your bargaining power and the better your chances of negotiating a bigger discount.

Rarity:

The rarity of the action figure you are looking for will not only influence where you buy it from but also the price you are likely to have to pay for it.

5) Where to Buy Your Action Figures From

There are many different places you can go to buy your action figures and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

High Street Stores: You're first and best place for buying any mass produced action figures.

Specialist Stores: Good for your "niche" market action figures, short production runs, and exclusives. Generally more expensive but you will usually get better and more individual service.

Car Boot & Garage Sales: Excellent places for finding bargains but generally any action figures found here are likely to be in poor condition, but great for spare parts, accessories or loose figure to use for customizing.

Online Shops/Stores: Excellent value and generally good service and most items can be pre-ordered. However shipping cost can be prohibitive and you need to choose your supplier carefully.

Collectors Fairs and Comic Cons: An excellent place to find any exclusives or action figures missing from your collection and to find out the latest news and gossip.

Magazines and Newspapers: Make sure you check the classified section regularly, you'll be surprised by what you can pick up at bargain prices.

Government Auctions/Local Auctions: These are held regularly to sell off any goods seized by customs, VAT Inspectors or bankruptcy. There are many bargains to be found at local and government auctions as they are generally not advertized and few people know about them

Online Auctions:

Dealing with online stores or auction sites brings its own unique set of problems and dangers and can be a minefield BUT they can also be a very good resources.

6) Who Do You Trust?

The biggest problem with buying your action figures online is finding an honest, reliable, and efficient trader with excellent service and reasonable prices without the extortionate shipping prices.

Below are the steps that I usually take when I'm looking for a new supplier.

Google search the item

Look at the top ten sites listed

Check the prices, don't forget to include shipping and bulk discounts.

Send an e-mail enquiry, if they take more than a day or two to answer then reconsider using them.

Google the site name: check reputation

Short list the top three and make a "trial" order from your top choice.

Follow these simple steps and you should find a trustworthy and reputable dealer to order from without running the risk of loosing your money.

7) A More Few Tips and Hints

The biggest scam on the internet currently is phishing or identity theft. NEVER EVER EVER give out any passwords, id's, bank details etc by email.

Always go to the companies or banks website through your browser, i.e. Explorer, Safari, Firefox or Opera etc.

Google Alert- this is an excellent tool and highly recommended. Let's say you are looking for a Rock WWF(E) wrestling figure. All you need to do is add an alert for The Rock, or The Rock WWF and whenever this is used on a forum or website (or eBay listing) Google will email you with a link to the site or auction concerned!

Register on any relevant forums or newsgroups, these are great sources for finding figures either for trade or sale, often in mint condition.

Shaping the Future with Permaculture

Nobody can now deny the rising tide of awareness of an urgent need to change, which has been accelerating rapidly over the past 12 months. Most people are coming to accept the reality of climate change, and it's connection to increasing droughts, water crises and extreme weather events, and to accept that we all have a role to play in the solution process. A new terminology is infiltrating the media and people's consciousness, terms like Foodmiles, Footprint, Peak Oil, Energy Descent, Relocalisation, Water Security...

What the global situation demands, for any form of sustainable future for humans and most other species inhabiting planet earth, is a major shift in lifestyle, thinking and expectations in the affluent populations of the world.

The recently released WWF Living Planet Report 2007 is a humbling reminder that we cannot afford to continue consuming resources at current levels. If the earth's 3.6 billion people lived like the average American, we'd need more than 5 (five) plant earths to sustain ourselves. If everyone lived like the average Australian we'd require almost 4 planets.

Our 'western' lifestyle is literally costing the earth. In the past 50 years more resources have been consumed than in the entire history of the human race-that is, over the preceding 200,000 years. Consumerism, economic rationalism and trade for trade's sake have run riot in a world environment conceding and acquiescing to corporate aspirations and global market manipulations, at the expense of the environment and social justice, particularly over this past decade since the mid-nineties.

The paradigm shift required to live within our footprint will demand that we radically contract into a conserver society, get over our 'Affluenza' quick smart, and embrace frugality as a moral obligation. If we don't get tough on ourselves, the world will get even tougher on us as the consequences of inaction or insufficient action take their toll.

Empowerment for Shaping a Sustainable Future
The future is most certainly in our hands in a more profound way than ever before in history. The most critical thinking to direct our actions today, tomorrow and every day thereafter is to make a commitment to being an effective earth-steward and support others in the changes to an earth-friendly lifestyle-we all need to learn to live within our footprint.

This calls for us to effectively re-invent ourselves, and our relationship to the world around us; in our daily living, in our work, and the myriad interactions we constantly engage in-within our community and society at large.

While there are many small things we can do immediately through behavioural adjustments and becoming more aware consumers, the paradigm shift to become an effective agent of change demands a degree of knowledge, skills, and practical ecological savvy that has been seriously neglected in our education systems. There is so much to learn, and little time to waste.

Permaculture Solutions

This is where permaculture has the most to offer the world at present, in empowering people with the knowledge and tools to make informed decisions, solve problems and develop creative responses in their home, through their work, in business, in their community and beyond. The Permaculture (Permanent as in 'sustainable' culture) concept was first expounded by ecologist Bill Mollison and environmental designer David Holmgren in Tasmania, Australia in the mid-seventies.

Permaculture provides 3 decades of global experience at the cutting edge of sustainable living, development and design. Drawing on the lessons of history, the best of sustainable traditional and indigenous wisdoms, it weaves a fresh approach to eco-literacy, environmental science and social justice as a practical and realistic design system for a sustainable future.

At the heart of permaculture's success lies empowerment through education. This has largely been through the intensive 2-week or 72+hour program known as the Permaculture Design Course or PDC. This course covers the A-Z of permaculture design principles and applications for rural and urban environments and lifestyles, and is recognised internationally as the minimum training requirement for permaculture designers and teachers.

It is estimated that over 500,000 people have completed the PDC around the world--in all climates and continents--and are effecting profound changes on the local level and through national and international organisations. Inspiring and empowering, this is a crash course in practical eco-literacy and practical strategies to reduce your footprint, design and establish productive environments, develop systems for survival, and be a catalyst for change through individual and community action.

Since 2003 permaculture education in Australia has taken the next step in preparing people as shapers and makers of a sustainable future with the introduction of nationally accredited vocational training in sustainable systems design and community development. The Accredited Permaculture Training™ (APT) aims to train the new generation of earth-stewards and custodians of the future, the tradespeople and professionals for a post-carbon society.

As a society in transition to a new and uncertain future, we need to pro-actively harness the opportunities this crisis presents, to respond in a creative way by embracing change and taking personal and collective responsibility for the kind of world we bequeath to our children and future generations.

Do Yourself a Favour

The most important investment you can make in your personal future, your career, family well-being, to your community, society and the earth that sustains you, is to gain the knowledge, skills and tools to participate intelligently in shaping a future that has a future, and become an effective agent and catalyst for change.
